Things to Know Before Visiting the Dead Sea in Jordan

Overview of the Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is a huge salt lake that’s bordered by both Jordan and Israel. It’s actually the lowest place on earth with an elevation of 414 meters (1,412 ft) below sea level.

Known for its incredibly high concentrations of saline and healing mineral waters, this place is popular for a reason.

However, the most famous thing about the Dead Sea is that you can effortlessly float in the water. Due to its high levels of saline, you’ll float as soon as you enter the lake so it doesn’t matter if you’re not a strong swimmer.

In fact, the Dead Sea is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world, with it being nearly 10x saltier than the ocean!

Best time to visit the Dead Sea

If you’re heading to the Dead Sea, then the best times to visit are spring and fall. Spring runs between March and May, while fall runs from October to November.

Although many people like to visit during the summer, the months of July and August are extremely hot in the Middle East so it can be quite an uncomfortable experience!

The shoulder months of June and September are also good times to visit, but the temperature can still be relatively high during this time of year.

You’ll also want to try to get there before the crowds descend, as it will make for a more pleasant experience.

Tips for visiting the Dead Sea

Here are some tips for visiting the Dead Sea to make sure you have the best experience:

  • Make sure you wear flip-flops or water shoes when you get in as some of the stones underneath are very sharp!
  • This may sound strange, but don’t shave for a couple of days before you get in the Dead Sea. The concentration of salt will cause this to sting, and that goes for cuts and bruises too.
  • Don’t spend more than 10-15 minutes in the water as you can become incredibly dehydrated, especially during the warmer months.
  • Make sure you wear a swimsuit that you’re not bothered about as the saline can cause discoloration and degrade the material.
  • During your trip to the Dead Sea, make sure you either buy some Deep Sea mud to lather yourself in or treat yourself to a spa treatment.
  • Avoid taking your camera into the Dead Sea itself because the high concentration of saline can affect the lens!

How to Choose the Best Dead Sea Hotel in Jordan

Although the Dead Sea occupies a huge area, most of the hotels are situated on the northern edge of the Dead Sea.

Since it’s such a popular place one would think that you can find lots of hotels, but that’s not the case. There are only a few hotels located near the Dead Sea, so your options are quite limited.

When it comes to choosing the best Dead Sea hotel in Jordan, there are a few things that you’ll want to keep in mind.

Location

The first thing you’ll want to consider is the location of your hotel. As I mentioned before, most of the hotels are located on the northern edge of the Dead Sea.

If you want to be close to all the action, then you’ll want to choose a hotel that’s located in this area. However, if you want to escape the hustle and bustle then you can choose a hotel that’s located further away.

It’s really up to you and what you want out of your trip!

Budget

The second thing you’ll want to consider is your budget. The Dead Sea is a popular spot so hotels can be on the pricier side.

Unfortunately, you don’t really have a budget option here since there are only a handful of hotels. The cheapest one is around $200 per night and while it might not sound much, it’s still quite pricey compared to the rest of Jordan.

If you want to save some money, you can always opt to visit the Dead Sea as a day trip but that’s definitely not the same experience as staying at a hotel with private beach access.

Amenities

The third thing you’ll want to consider is the amenities that are offered by the hotel. Most of the hotels in this area offer a private beach, pool, and spa.

Some of the hotels also offer other activities such as horseback riding, Jeep tours, and more. When it comes to choosing the best Dead Sea hotel in Jordan, it really depends on what you’re looking for and what you want out of your trip.

If your budget allows, I would recommend choosing a hotel with direct beach access. Due to the high level of salt in the water, it’s important to rinse off your body as soon as you get out of the water to avoid scratching your skin.

Hotels with private beach access will have showers and other facilities that you can use to rinse off, which is very convenient.

Now that you know a little bit more about the Dead Sea and what to look for in a hotel, let’s take a look at some of the best Dead Sea hotels in Jordan!
